LAMS Approved Motorcycles/Motorbikes for Learner Riders

We have a variety of different motorcycles that are LAMS approved. If you are just starting, we recommend that you hire a lower cc motorcycle just to get yourself a bit of experience. The Honda CB125E’s are the perfect learner bike; It shows you gear and is easy to handle.

Please note that Motorcycle learners and license holders with a restricted license may only ride motorcycles and scooters under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS).

Rider Responsibility

Although we will check your license, it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure that you only ride an approved motorcycle.The LAMS register is managed by VicRoads and lists approved motorcycle models with an engine capacity of 261 – 660cc. We may also exclude motorcycles from the LAMS list if they have other characteristics that make them unsuitable for learners or are over-represented in crashes.

To qualify as a LAMS motorcycle, the vehicle must meet all the following criteria:

  • The motorcycle must be in a standard form as produced by the manufacturer;
  • Not changed in a way that increases its power mass ratio;
  • Have a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne or less; and
  • An engine capacity of 660cc or less.

All motorcycles manufactured before 1960 with a cubic capacity up to and including 660cc, and available fully electric-powered motorcycles are also approved for use by novice riders.
